A/B Testing for Popup Campaigns

Learn how to create, run, and analyze A/B tests for your popup campaigns to optimize conversions with data-driven decisions.

A/B testing allows you to compare different versions of a popup campaign to determine which variation performs better. By testing multiple variants and analyzing their performance, you can optimize your popup campaigns to increase leads, interactions, and conversion rates.

Popupsmart's A/B testing feature lets you distribute traffic across different popup variants and select a winner based on real performance data.

Creating an A/B Test

To start an A/B test for a popup campaign:

Popupsmart A/B Testing dashboard showing the Create A/B Test button in the top-right corner

  1. Go to A/B Testing from the left sidebar in your Popupsmart dashboard.
  2. Click Create A/B Test in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. This will open the A/B test setup process.

Select a Campaign

First, choose the popup campaign you want to test.

Select Campaign dialog showing a searchable list of existing popup campaigns with a Continue button

  1. Search or select a campaign from the list.
  2. Click Continue to proceed.

The selected campaign will become Variant A, which serves as the original version of your popup.

Set Up Variants

Next, configure the variants for your A/B test.

Setup Variants screen showing Variant A and Variant B with traffic share sliders set to 50% each

By default, Popupsmart creates two variants:

  • Variant A -- The original popup campaign you selected.
  • Variant B -- A variation of the original campaign.

You can adjust how traffic is distributed between the variants. For example, you may split traffic evenly (50% / 50%) so each variant receives the same number of visitors.

You can also click Add Variant to test additional versions of the popup if needed.

Once you finish setting up the variants and traffic distribution, click Continue.

Configure Test Conclusion

In this step, you choose how the A/B test will be finalized.

Popupsmart provides two options:

Manually

You select the winning variant yourself after reviewing the test results. The A/B test will continue running until you manually stop it.

Automatically

Popupsmart will automatically determine the winning variant based on a selected success metric and end date.

You can choose one of the following success metrics:

  • Lead Number -- The variant that collects the most leads wins.
  • Interaction -- The variant with the most user interactions wins.
  • Conversion Rate -- The variant with the highest conversion rate wins.

You must also set an end date for the test. When the selected date is reached, Popupsmart will automatically select the best-performing variant.

Click Done to create the A/B test.

Monitoring A/B Test Results

After creating the test, it will appear in the A/B Testing section of your dashboard.

For each variant, you can monitor key performance metrics, including:

  • Views
  • Interactions
  • Conversion Rate
  • Leads

These metrics help you evaluate which popup variant performs better.

Managing Your A/B Tests

From the A/B testing dashboard, you can also manage your tests. Available actions include:

A/B test actions dropdown menu showing options for Change configure test conclusion, Rename campaign, and Delete

  • Change test conclusion settings
  • Rename the campaign
  • Delete the A/B test

You can also review each variant's traffic share and performance to determine the most effective popup design.

Tips for Effective A/B Testing

To get reliable results from your A/B tests:

  • Test one major change at a time (such as headline, CTA, or design).
  • Allow the test to run long enough to collect sufficient data.
  • Use equal traffic distribution when comparing two variants.
  • Choose a success metric that aligns with your campaign goal.

A/B testing helps you continuously improve your popup campaigns and maximize conversions with data-driven decisions.
