Popupsmart vs Popup Maker

Popup Maker, the plugin from wppopupmaker.com, builds popups inside WordPress: its core is free on WordPress.org with no traffic limit, and its Pro licences are priced per site, per year. Popupsmart is a popup builder that installs with one snippet on any website, WordPress included, and is priced by monthly pageviews. The two don't bill in the same unit, so this page sets out what each costs for your sites and what each free plan holds back. Each figure comes from the two companies' own pages, Popup Maker's WordPress.org page, Popupsmart's 2026 benchmark or the products' reviewers, with the date it was read.

Choose Popupsmart if…

  • Your site isn't on WordPress, or you run sites on more than one platform
  • You want exit intent, scroll, traffic-source and location targeting on the free plan
  • You want leads sent straight to HubSpot, Klaviyo or ActiveCampaign, with no plugin required

Choose Popup Maker if…

  • Your site runs on WordPress and you want popups free, with no traffic limit
  • You'd rather pay a yearly licence per site, or once for a lifetime licence
  • You build forms in Gravity Forms or WPForms, or sell through WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads or LifterLMS

Popupsmart or Popup Maker: which should you choose?

Choose Popup Maker if your site runs on WordPress and price decides it: its core plugin is free with no traffic limit, and Pro costs $99 a year for one site. Choose Popupsmart if your site isn't on WordPress, if you run sites on more than one platform, or if you want exit intent, traffic-source and location targeting and a direct line to your email tool from the free plan up, with no plugin required.

On a single WordPress site, Popup Maker costs less at any traffic. The free plugin builds unlimited popups with no pageview limit, targets posts, pages, categories and tags, controls how often a popup shows, and stores signups in your WordPress database with its own form. Pro, at $99 a year ($8.25 a month), adds exit intent, scroll triggers, analytics, split tests and most of its targeting; Popupsmart's Basic plan costs $32.50 a month on annual billing. A one-site Pro licence can also be bought once, for $299. It lives inside WordPress: popups are built in the block editor or in page builders such as Elementor and Divi, it works with 15 form plugins, and Pro+ at $249 a year adds carts, discounts and revenue attribution for WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads and LifterLMS. Its code is open source. The WordPress.org directory counted 700,000+ active installations on 26 Sep 2026, and 4,278 of the plugin's 4,508 ratings there are five stars.

Popupsmart's case is reach, the free plan's rules and the connections. It installs with one snippet on any website, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace or a custom site as well as WordPress, and its entry plan covers three websites on any mix of them. Every targeting rule is on every plan, the free one included: exit intent, scroll depth, traffic source, location, new or returning visitors and browser language, where Popup Maker sells exit intent, scroll, referrer and location targeting in Pro and doesn't list new-visitor or browser-language rules. Leads go to 19 destinations on every plan, with direct connections to HubSpot, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign and Salesforce among them; Popup Maker connects directly to Mailchimp, AWeber and FluentCRM on Pro and reaches other tools through a form plugin or a pasted signup form. The AI builder drafts a popup from a prompt. And the popups are built and stored in Popupsmart's app, not in your WordPress database, so a WordPress, PHP or theme update doesn't touch them.

A word on who wrote this. I founded Popupsmart in 2018, after five years of growth consulting at Flatart, the agency I started in 2013, so I'm not a neutral judge here, and I've made the page checkable instead. Every Popup Maker fact is from wppopupmaker.com, its docs or its WordPress.org page, read on 26 Sep 2026. Its users review it on WordPress.org rather than on G2, where it has 11 reviews and none written since January 2023. So we read those 11, and every WordPress.org review rated three stars or lower, 96 in all. They are a small share of its ratings; we read them to see where a popup plugin goes wrong for the people it fails, not how often it does.

How the two differ

Popupsmart

Popupsmart is a popup builder billed by pageviews that installs with one snippet on any website and hands each lead to the tool you connect: every targeting rule is on every plan, and the plans differ by traffic, websites, analytics and A/B testing.

The free plan carries 5,000 pageviews a month on one website with every targeting rule and campaign type, one popup live at a time and Popupsmart branding. Paid plans run from $39 a month for 50,000 pageviews on three websites to $159 for 500,000 on unlimited websites, about a sixth less on annual billing, and add unlimited popups, analytics, custom fonts and Smart Mode, which picks the audience with AI; A/B testing starts on the Advanced plan. The AI builder drafts a whole campaign from a prompt. Popups are built and stored in Popupsmart's app and appear through one script, added by hand, through Google Tag Manager, the Shopify app or an optional WordPress plugin. Each lead goes to the email or CRM tool you connect, with an autoresponder email on every plan.

Popup Maker

Popup Maker is a WordPress plugin, free and open source at its core, whose Pro licences add the triggers, targeting and analytics the free plugin leaves out, priced per site and per year rather than by traffic.

The free plugin builds unlimited popups with no traffic limit: bars, slide-ins, floating boxes, notices and signup forms, opened on a delay, a click or a form submission, and shown on chosen posts, pages, categories and tags, with cookies to control how often. It has its own signup form, works with 15 form plugins and 9 page builders, and hides a popup on mobile or tablet. Pro costs $99 a year for one site, $249 for five and $1,299 for 100, with 40% off the first year as a launch offer, and adds exit intent and scroll triggers, analytics, split tests, targeting by URL, referrer, location, browser, operating system, user role and schedule, and Mailchimp, AWeber and FluentCRM connections. Pro+ at $249 adds WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads and LifterLMS actions and revenue attribution. A lifetime licence for one site costs $299 once. There is no monthly billing, and a licence left to lapse keeps working without updates or support.

Prices as each company's pages showed them from a US location on 26 Sep 2026. Popup Maker doesn't price by traffic: its free plugin and its Pro licences have no pageview limit, and its prices change with the number of sites. So this page draws no price bars: at every traffic tier the Popup Maker bar would be the same. On one WordPress site it costs less at any traffic, $99 a year for Pro against Popupsmart's $32.50 a month on annual billing for Basic. Its multi-site prices after the first year are the price options on its lifetime-deal page; the pricing page shows first-year prices under a 40% launch offer it calls limited-time.

Popup Maker's column is read from wppopupmaker.com's pricing, lifetime-deal, features and integrations pages, its Mailchimp, AWeber and FluentCRM pages, its docs (the signup form, triggers, mobile, split tests, video, GDPR, analytics) and its WordPress.org page on 26 Sep 2026. Popupsmart's column is from our pricing page and help center. A dash means the company's own pages don't list it.

The features they plan differently, against 28,674 campaigns

Popup Maker's free plugin opens a popup on a delay, a click or a form submission and targets it by page; exit intent, scroll, referrer and location targeting come with Pro. Popupsmart puts all of these on every plan, the free one included. We measured them in our 2026 benchmark: 28,674 campaigns from 11,533 businesses that ran a popup with Popupsmart between January 2024 and September 2026. Not every result helps our case. Exit intent's advantage could be chance, and the two rules both products give away free, a time delay and page targeting, are in the list too.

CapabilityWhat 28,674 Popupsmart campaigns showedPopupsmartPopup Maker
Exit intentNo statistically reliable advantage: popups on the most sensitive exit-intent setting converted 1.10% vs 0.78% without exit intent (median campaign), a gap that could be chance.Every plan, free includedPro
Traffic sourceVisitors arriving from an email or SMS campaign convert on popups at 1.81% vs 0.74% for visitors from organic search.Every plan, free includedReferrer, on Pro
LocationBy visitor country, popups convert 0.76% for visitors in the United Kingdom vs 0.34% in Germany, and 2.01% in Mexico vs 0.46% in the United States (median campaign).Every plan, free includedPro
New and returning visitorsPopups targeted at new visitors only convert 1.13% vs 0.77% for popups shown to everyone.Every plan, free included
Browser languageWhen a visitor's browser language matches the popup's language, the same popup converts better in most campaigns.Every plan, free included
Page targetingPopups on cart and checkout pages convert 4.57% vs 1.07% on the home page (median campaign); blog pages convert 0.23%.Every plan, free includedFree plugin
Time delayPopups that wait before appearing convert 0.83% vs 0.61% for popups shown the instant the page loads (median campaign); the direction holds in every year of data but the difference is not statistically reliable, so treat it as a lean, not a rule.Every plan, free includedFree plugin
Autoresponder emailAmong businesses whose popups collect an email or phone number, 16% connect an external tool and 64% turn on the built-in autoresponder email.Every plan, free included

Rates are per popup display. "Median campaign" means half the campaigns did better and half did worse. Each line is quoted from the benchmark with its qualifiers: where it says a gap could be chance, treat it as a lean, not a rule. The benchmark measured Popupsmart popups, so it shows what a feature did there, not what it does inside Popup Maker. Plans as each company's pages listed them on 26 Sep 2026.

G2 has few reviews of Popup Maker, and none written since January 2023; its users mostly review it on WordPress.org. The G2 reviewers praise how easy it is to use, how quickly a popup is running, the triggers and display options, and a free version that holds the options most sites need. The complaints are about styling beyond the basics, which takes CSS, a first learning curve through many settings, a few templates, and, in two reviews each, styles lost or mobile display trouble and the weight it adds to a page.

Reviewers most often praise how easy Popupsmart is to use and to set up without a developer, then its design options, its targeting and the leads it brings. Their complaints centre on limits: design options they would like wider, the free plan and pageview caps, the price step from free to paid, missing features and reporting depth.

Popupsmart

How we made this comparison

Written from experience

We have built and sold Popupsmart, a popup builder, since 2018. That tells us what decides a purchase in this category: how a tool bills, what its free plan holds back, where it sends a lead, and what its users say. Those are the rows on this page.

It also makes Popupsmart one of the two products compared here. So nothing on the page rests on our word alone: every figure comes with its source and the date we read it.

Written by Emre Elbeyoğlu, Founder & CEO of Popupsmart.

The companies' own pages

Popup Maker's plans and features were read live from wppopupmaker.com on 26 Sep 2026, from a US location, as a buyer sees them: its pricing page, its lifetime-deal page, its features page, its integrations page, its WordPress.org plugin page, its help center and its home page.

Popupsmart's figures come from our pricing page and our help center. A feature a company's own pages don't list shows as "Not listed", not as missing.

G2's reviews

On 26 Sep 2026 we collected every review of both products on G2: all 11 of Popup Maker's and all 141 of Popupsmart's. An AI assistant read each one in full and sorted what it praises and criticises into themes, counting a review once per theme. No person has checked every tag. The ratings and review counts are G2's.

The quotes are verbatim, checked word for word against G2, and each links to its review with the labels G2 gives it: organic or invited, incentivized or not. Reviews reach G2 in different ways, so each product's source line says how many are which, and when they were written.

We re-read the companies' pages and G2 at least every 90 days, and the dates on this page move when we do. If a figure here is out of date, tell us through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Popupsmart and Popup Maker?
Popup Maker is a WordPress plugin: popups are built inside WordPress, the core plugin is free with no traffic limit, and Pro licences, from $99 a year for one site, add exit intent, scroll triggers, analytics and most of its targeting. Popupsmart is a popup builder that installs with one snippet on any website, priced by monthly pageviews: a free plan for 5,000, then $39 a month for 50,000 on three websites. Popupsmart puts every targeting rule on every plan, connects to 19 email, CRM and automation destinations, and drafts popups with AI; Popup Maker is cheaper on a single WordPress site and works with WordPress form plugins, page builders, WooCommerce and LifterLMS.
Which Popup Maker does this page compare?
The WordPress plugin called Popup Maker, from wppopupmaker.com, made by Code Atlantic and listed on WordPress.org since 2014. It isn't popupmaker.com, a different online popup builder with the same name, which also sells plugins for WordPress, Shopify and other platforms. "Popup maker" is also a common way to describe any popup builder, Popupsmart included.
Is Popup Maker free?
Its core plugin is. On WordPress.org it is free with unlimited popups, no traffic limit and no end date: it opens popups on a delay, a click or a form submission, shows them on chosen posts, pages, categories and tags, controls how often with cookies, and has its own signup form. Exit intent and scroll triggers, analytics, split tests and targeting by URL, referrer, location, browser, operating system, user role or schedule need Pro, $99 a year for one site. Popupsmart's free plan covers 5,000 pageviews a month on one website, with every targeting rule, exit intent included, one popup live at a time and Popupsmart branding.
How much does Popup Maker Pro cost?
Pro costs $99 a year for one site, $249 for five, $599 for 25 and $1,299 for 100. Pro+, which adds WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads and LifterLMS features and revenue attribution, costs $249 a year for one site. Its pricing page takes 40% off the first year as a launch offer it calls limited-time. A one-site lifetime licence costs $299 once for Pro and $749 for Pro+, with three years of support and updates for the life of the site. There is no monthly billing, and a licence left to lapse keeps working without updates or support. Refunds are offered within 30 days. These are the prices its pages showed from a US location on 26 Sep 2026.
Is Popup Maker cheaper than Popupsmart?
On a single WordPress site, yes, at any traffic. Its free plugin has no pageview limit, and Pro costs $99 a year, $8.25 a month, against Popupsmart's Basic plan at $32.50 a month on annual billing or $39 month to month. Popupsmart's free plan covers the first 5,000 pageviews a month. The sum changes with what you need: Popupsmart's free plan already includes exit intent, scroll, traffic-source and location targeting, which Popup Maker sells in Pro, and its entry plan covers three websites on any platform, where Popup Maker Pro costs $249 a year for five WordPress sites.
Can I use Popup Maker on Shopify, Wix or Webflow?
No. Popup Maker is a WordPress plugin and runs only on WordPress sites, including WooCommerce stores. Popupsmart installs with one snippet on any website: Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, a custom site or WordPress, through the snippet, Google Tag Manager, its Shopify app or an optional WordPress plugin that adds the snippet for you. One Popupsmart account covers sites on different platforms: three on the Basic plan, unlimited on Expert.
Does exit intent need a paid plan?
In Popup Maker, yes: exit intent and scroll triggers come with Pro, $99 a year; the free plugin opens a popup on a delay, a click or a form submission. In Popupsmart, exit intent is on every plan, the free one included. In Popupsmart's 2026 benchmark, exit intent shows no statistically reliable advantage: popups on the most sensitive exit-intent setting converted 1.10% vs 0.78% without exit intent (median campaign), a gap that could be chance. So it's worth testing, not a reason on its own to pay.
Which email tools does each connect to?
Popupsmart connects directly to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Salesforce, ActiveCampaign, Brevo, Customer.io, Drip, SendGrid, MailerLite and EmailOctopus, plus Zapier, Make and webhooks, on every plan; its help center lists 19 destinations in all, a few of them reached through Zapier. Popup Maker connects directly to Mailchimp and AWeber, both included in Pro or sold as extensions, to FluentCRM on Pro and to The Newsletter Plugin. For any other tool, you paste that tool's own signup form into the popup, use a WordPress form plugin that connects to it, or add WP Fusion, a paid plugin. Its free signup form stores subscribers in your WordPress database.
Which one is better for a WooCommerce or Shopify store?
For WooCommerce, Popup Maker's Pro+ plan, $249 a year, goes further: popups that add to the cart, apply a discount, run upsells, cross-sells and cart-abandonment offers, target by cart and purchase history, and attribute revenue to each popup, with the same for Easy Digital Downloads and LifterLMS. Popupsmart runs on WooCommerce sites through its snippet or plugin, but its cart targeting, unique discount codes and revenue reporting are built for Shopify, where Popup Maker doesn't run. On a Shopify store, the choice is Popupsmart's.
Will either one slow down my site?
We haven't measured Popup Maker, so this is what each side publishes. Popupsmart's own measurement puts its script at about 97 KB, loading in about 124 ms, and its popups are built and stored in Popupsmart's app rather than in WordPress. Popup Maker runs inside WordPress as a plugin. Page speed comes up rarely in reviews of either: in 2 of Popup Maker's 11 G2 reviews and 5 of the 96 low-rated WordPress.org reviews we read, and in 4 of Popupsmart's 141 G2 reviews. Counts this small don't settle the question; test your own pages before and after.
What do reviewers say about Popup Maker and Popupsmart?
On 26 Sep 2026, Popup Maker's G2 profile had 11 reviews rated 4.6, the newest from January 2023, and Popupsmart's 141 rated 4.5. Popup Maker's users review it on WordPress.org, where 4,278 of its 4,508 ratings are five stars and 25 reviews were written in the past twelve months, 18 of them five stars. We read every review there rated three stars or lower, 96 in all, written from 2015 to 2026. Can I switch from Popup Maker to Popupsmart?
Yes. Add Popupsmart to your WordPress site with its plugin or the snippet, rebuild your best popup on the free plan and connect your email tool, so new leads go to the list you already use. If you collected signups with Popup Maker's own form, they are in a table in your WordPress database; its docs say to export that table with a database tool, for example as a CSV. Then deactivate Popup Maker's popups, or the plugin, once the new popup is live. If you rely on its WooCommerce or LifterLMS actions, weigh those first: Popupsmart's store features are built for Shopify.
