Popupsmart vs Privy

Privy is an email and SMS platform for online stores with popups built in; Popupsmart is a popup builder that hands each lead to the email tool you already use. Both price their popups by pageviews, so the prices below compare directly, and Privy also sells an email plan, priced by contacts, that includes its popups. Each figure on this page comes from the two companies' own pages, from Popupsmart's 2026 benchmark or from G2's reviewers, with the date it was read.

Choose Popupsmart if…

  • You keep your own email tool, or use one Privy doesn't connect to directly, such as HubSpot, ActiveCampaign or Brevo
  • Your site gets more than 10,000 pageviews a month and you only need popups
  • You want a free plan, AI that drafts the popup, or three websites on the entry plan

Choose Privy if…

  • You want popups, email and SMS in one app, priced by your contacts
  • Your site gets 10,000 pageviews a month or fewer and you only need popups
  • You need landing pages, embedded forms, or an app such as Attentive, Postscript, Yotpo or Recharge connected

Popupsmart or Privy: which should you choose?

Choose Privy if you want your popups, email and SMS in one app and will send your email from it, since its email plan includes the popups; choose Popupsmart if you keep your own email tool and want the popups priced by pageviews. Above 10,000 pageviews a month Popupsmart costs less at every tier we compared, from $39 against $84 at 50,000 to $159 against $420 at 500,000.

Privy does more than popups. Its Email plan costs $30 a month for up to 1,500 contacts and covers unlimited email sends, automated flows, segments, revenue reporting and 250 SMS credits a month, with the displays included and no pageview limit stated for them. Its targeting reads a store closely: the products and variants in the cart, the cart's value, how many orders a contact has placed, and location down to the postal code. It builds landing pages, embedded forms, cross-sell displays and a free shipping bar, and connects to SMS, review, loyalty and subscription apps such as Attentive, Postscript, Yotpo and Recharge. Up to 10,000 pageviews its popups-only plan costs $24 a month to Popupsmart's $39. On the Shopify App Store it had 4,212 reviews rated 4.5 on 26 Sep 2026; on G2 it is rated 4.6 from 122, Popupsmart 4.5 from 141.

Popupsmart's case is price, your own email tool and the builder. For popups alone it costs less at every tier above 10,000 pageviews, and its free plan covers 5,000 pageviews a month with no end date, where Privy offers a 15-day trial. It connects directly to HubSpot, Salesforce, ActiveCampaign, Brevo, Customer.io and other email and CRM tools; of email tools, Privy's integrations page lists Klaviyo and Mailchimp. Its AI popup builder drafts a whole campaign from a prompt, Smart Mode picks the audience on paid plans, and every targeting rule is on every plan, including operating system, browser and cookie rules that Privy doesn't list. The entry plan covers three websites.

A word on who wrote this. I founded Popupsmart in 2018, after five years of growth consulting at Flatart, the agency I started in 2013, so I'm not a neutral judge here, and I've made the page checkable instead. Every Privy fact is from privy.com, its help center or its Shopify App Store listing, read on 26 Sep 2026. Its pricing page shows a price only after you pick a tier, so we opened every option and saved what each one showed. Its G2 reviews are older than ours: 96 of its 122 were written in 2021 and 2022 and one in the past twelve months, so read them as a picture of Privy then.

How the two differ

Popupsmart

Popupsmart is a popup builder billed by pageviews that hands each lead to the email tool you connect: AI drafts the campaign, every targeting rule is on every plan, and the plans differ by traffic, websites, analytics and A/B testing.

The free plan carries 5,000 pageviews a month with every targeting rule and campaign type, one popup live at a time and Popupsmart branding. Paid plans run from $39 a month for 50,000 pageviews on three websites to $159 for 500,000 on unlimited websites, about a sixth less on annual billing. They add unlimited popups, analytics, custom CSS and Smart Mode, which picks the audience with AI; A/B testing starts on the Advanced plan. The AI popup builder drafts a whole campaign from a prompt. Each lead goes to the email or CRM tool you connect, with an autoresponder email on every plan. On Shopify it targets by cart value, contents and purchase history, creates a unique discount code for each visitor and reports the revenue its popups drive.

Privy

Privy is an email and SMS platform for online stores with popups built in: its Displays plan sells the popups alone by pageviews, and its email plans include them, priced by contacts.

The Displays plan costs $24 a month for up to 10,000 pageviews, $84 for 50,000, $168 for 100,000 and $420 for 500,000, with unlimited popups, A/B testing, spin-to-win, multi-step forms and quizzes, landing pages and embedded forms; it has no email or SMS. The Email plan costs $30 a month for up to 1,500 mailable contacts and adds unlimited email sends, flows, segments, revenue reporting and 250 SMS credits a month, with the displays included; a longer list costs more. There is no free plan: a 15-day trial, after which the displays stop. It installs through apps for Shopify, BigCommerce and Wix and by script elsewhere, and targets by the products in a Shopify cart, cart value and order count, location down to the postal code, and session count.

Monthly list prices, billed monthly, as each company's pricing page showed them from a US location on 26 Sep 2026. Both count pageviews, so the bars compare like with like: Privy's Displays plan, which covers popups alone, against Popupsmart's plans, each tier priced at the smallest plan that covers it. Privy's pricing page shows a price only after you pick a tier; every tier was picked and read. The bars leave out Privy's email plans: they include the displays and are priced by mailable contacts, from $30 a month for up to 1,500, with no pageview limit stated. If you'd send your email from Privy, compare that price instead.

Reviewers praise the leads and sales Privy brings in above everything else, then its built-in email and SMS, which comes up in more than half of the reviews: newsletters, welcome series and abandoned-cart emails sent from the same tool as the pop-ups. After that come how easy it is to use, its customer support and onboarding, and its design options. About a fifth name nothing they dislike. The complaints are about an editor and dashboard that take time to learn, missing features, most of them in email and SMS, such as automated flows and exact send times, the price, with texting and other features costing extra and the bill rising as the list grows, design and template choices, fonts above all, and plan limits. Most of these reviews were written in 2021 and 2022, the rest mostly between 2017 and 2020; very few have come in since.

Reviewers most often praise how easy Popupsmart is to use and to set up without a developer, then its design options, its targeting and the leads it brings. Their complaints centre on limits: design options they would like wider, the free plan and pageview caps, the price step from free to paid, missing features and reporting depth.

How we made this comparison

Written from experience

We have built and sold Popupsmart, a popup builder, since 2018. That tells us what decides a purchase in this category: how a tool bills, what its free plan holds back, where it sends a lead, and what its users say. Those are the rows on this page.

It also makes Popupsmart one of the two products compared here. So nothing on the page rests on our word alone: every figure comes with its source and the date we read it.

Written by Emre Elbeyoğlu, Founder & CEO of Popupsmart.

The companies' own pages

Privy's plans and features were read live from privy.com on 26 Sep 2026, from a US location, as a buyer sees them: its pricing page, its features page, its integrations page, its Shopify App Store listing, its help center and its home page.

Popupsmart's figures come from our pricing page and our help center. A feature a company's own pages don't list shows as "Not listed", not as missing.

G2's reviews

On 26 Sep 2026 we collected every review of both products on G2: all 122 of Privy's and all 141 of Popupsmart's. An AI assistant read each one in full and sorted what it praises and criticises into themes, counting a review once per theme. No person has checked every tag. The ratings and review counts are G2's.

The quotes are verbatim, checked word for word against G2, and each links to its review with the labels G2 gives it: organic or invited, incentivized or not. Reviews reach G2 in different ways, so each product's source line says how many are which, and when they were written.

We re-read the companies' pages and G2 at least every 90 days, and the dates on this page move when we do. If a figure here is out of date, tell us through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Popupsmart and Privy?
Privy is an email and SMS marketing platform for online stores, with popups built in; Popupsmart is a popup builder that hands each lead to the email tool you already use. Both price popups by pageviews: Privy's Displays plan from $24 a month for 10,000, Popupsmart from a free plan and $39 for 50,000. Privy's email plans add email campaigns, automated flows and SMS, priced by contacts, with the popups included. Popupsmart adds a free plan, AI that drafts the popup, Smart Mode and direct connections to email and CRM tools beyond Klaviyo and Mailchimp.
How much does Privy cost?
Privy sells two kinds of plan. The Displays plan covers popups alone and is priced by monthly pageviews: $24 a month for up to 10,000, $48 for 25,000, $84 for 50,000, $168 for 100,000, $300 for 200,000 and $420 for 500,000, with steps up to 3.5 million. The Email plan is priced by mailable contacts, from $30 a month for up to 1,500, and includes the displays, unlimited email sends and 250 SMS credits a month; its price climbs with your list. More SMS credits are an add-on, and dedicated strategists cost extra. There is no free plan, only a 15-day trial. These are the monthly prices its pricing page showed from a US location on 26 Sep 2026; the page lists no annual prices.
Is Privy cheaper than Popupsmart?
For popups alone, only on small sites. Both count pageviews, so the prices compare directly. Up to 10,000 pageviews a month, Privy's Displays plan costs $24 against Popupsmart's $39, though Popupsmart's free plan covers the first 5,000. Above that Popupsmart costs less at every tier we compared: $39 against $48 at 25,000, $39 against $84 at 50,000, $69 against $168 at 100,000, $99 against $420 at 250,000 and $159 against $420 at 500,000. The sum changes if you'd send your email from Privy too: its Email plan, from $30 a month for up to 1,500 contacts, includes the displays, and its pages state no pageview limit for them. Then the question is whether Privy's email is worth moving to, not what the popups cost.
Does Privy have a free plan?
No. Privy offers a 15-day trial: its displays run without feature or traffic limits, email sends are capped at 100 contacts a day, and SMS is available on request. When the trial ends, the displays stop showing until you choose a paid plan. Popupsmart has a free plan with no end date: 5,000 pageviews a month on one website, every targeting rule and campaign type, one popup live at a time, no analytics or A/B testing, and Popupsmart branding.
Can Popupsmart replace Privy's email and SMS?
No, and it isn't built to. Popupsmart sends no email campaigns and no text messages. It sends an autoresponder email to each new subscriber on every plan, with a monthly email quota from 100 on the free plan to 10,000 on Expert, and passes each lead, email address or phone number, to the tool you connect, such as Klaviyo, HubSpot or ActiveCampaign, which then sends your email and SMS. Privy sends both itself: its Email plan includes unlimited email sends, automated flows and 250 SMS credits a month, from $30 for up to 1,500 contacts, with more SMS credits as an add-on.
Which email tools does each connect to?
Popupsmart connects directly to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot, Salesforce, ActiveCampaign, Customer.io, Drip, SendGrid, MailerLite, EmailOctopus and Brevo, plus Zapier, Make and webhooks, and reaches Sendloop, Ontraport and Sendy through Zapier: the 19 destinations in its help center. Of email tools, Privy's integrations page lists Klaviyo and Mailchimp, plus Zapier; it also connects to the SMS tools Attentive, Postscript and Emotive, the help desk Gorgias, the review apps Judge.me and Junip, the loyalty apps Yotpo, Smile and Rivo, Recharge for subscriptions, and Alia. Privy is built to be your email tool; Popupsmart is built to feed the one you have.
Which one is better for a Shopify store?
Privy was built around online stores, and its store features run deeper: it targets by the products and variants in the cart, cart value and order count, attaches a coupon that applies itself at checkout, shows products in a display, runs cross-sell displays and a free shipping bar that follows the cart, and reports the orders and revenue from each display's signups. On the Shopify App Store it had 4,212 reviews rated 4.5 on 26 Sep 2026; Popupsmart's listing was rated 4.6 from 48 reviews as of 6 September 2026. Popupsmart targets by cart value, contents, purchase history and customer tags, creates a unique discount code for each visitor, shows products from a product feed and reports the revenue its popups drive. If you'd run the store's email and SMS from the same app, that's Privy's case; if Klaviyo or another tool already does, Popupsmart costs less above 10,000 pageviews.
Does Privy work on sites other than Shopify?
Yes. Privy installs through apps on Shopify, BigCommerce and Wix, has install guides for WordPress.org, Squarespace, Weebly, HubSpot sites and Google Tag Manager, and can be added by script to any other site. Some features depend on the store: cart targeting needs Shopify or BigCommerce (cart value also works on Squarespace), order-count targeting and product blocks in displays need Shopify, and revenue reporting needs Shopify or BigCommerce. Popupsmart installs with one line of JavaScript on any website, or through its Shopify app or WordPress plugin; its cart targeting and revenue reporting work on Shopify.
Do spin-to-win popups collect more leads?
Both tools build spin-to-win popups, and Privy lists them among the standard features of its Displays plan. In Popupsmart's 2026 benchmark, spin-to-win and other gamified popups get far more clicks (7.33% vs 1.87% of displays, median campaign; the spin itself counts as a click), but do not collect measurably more email or phone leads than plain signup popups. Offering a discount is a separate finding: signup popups that offer a discount code convert 1.46% vs 0.75% for signup popups without one. Both tools create a unique discount code for each visitor.
Do reviewers report bugs or slow support with either tool?
Few do. We had every G2 review of both products read and tagged: bugs come up in 5 of Privy's 122 reviews and 11 of Popupsmart's 141, slow support in none and 3, page speed in 3 and 4, and installation trouble in 1 and 6. Counts this small don't show either tool to be more reliable. Privy's support is praised in 43 of its 122 reviews, Popupsmart's in 22 of 141. Privy's recurring complaints are a learning curve, missing features, most of them in its email and SMS tools, and price; Popupsmart's are design options, missing features and plan limits.
How do G2 reviewers rate Popupsmart and Privy?
On 26 Sep 2026, Privy was rated 4.6 from 122 reviews and Popupsmart 4.5 from 141. Privy's reviewers praise the results first, then its built-in email and SMS and its ease of use; Popupsmart's praise ease of use, then setup without developers. Both sets came to G2 mostly by invitation: G2 labels 4 of Privy's 122 reviews organic, and most of Popupsmart's came through its own invitations. They were written at different times: 96 of Privy's in 2021 and 2022 and one in the past twelve months, against 59 of Popupsmart's in the past twelve months.
Can I switch from Privy to Popupsmart?
Yes, and you don't have to move everything. Popupsmart installs with one line of JavaScript on any website, or through its Shopify app or WordPress plugin. Rebuild your best display on the free plan first and upgrade once it converts. If you keep Privy for email and SMS, its Email plan already includes the displays, so moving the popups alone saves nothing there; the case for switching is the Displays plan, or an email tool other than Privy. Export your contacts from Privy as a CSV, connect your email tool in Popupsmart, and new leads go to the list you already use. Privy ends a plan's paid features as soon as you cancel it mid-cycle, so set up Popupsmart first.
