Popupsmart vs OptinMonster

Both are no-code popup builders that run on any website from one script. OptinMonster bills on campaign impressions and unlocks features plan by plan. It has more campaign formats, forms inside your pages among them, and on annual billing its first year costs less than Popupsmart at several traffic levels. Popupsmart bills on pageviews and puts every targeting rule and integration on every plan, the free one included. Each figure on this page comes from the two companies' own pages, from 28,674 Popupsmart campaigns or from G2's reviewers, with the date it was read.

Choose Popupsmart if…

  • You want exit intent, location, traffic-source and new-visitor targeting on every plan, the free one included
  • Your leads go to HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier or a webhook, and you don't want a higher plan for that
  • You need cookie consent, click-to-call or an autoresponder email, or several websites on one plan

Choose OptinMonster if…

  • You need forms inside your pages: inline and sidebar forms, or content lockers
  • Your site is small and the first year decides it: $7 a month for 2,500 impressions, billed annually
  • You build campaigns for clients and want sub-accounts, client logins and follow-up campaigns

Popupsmart or OptinMonster: which should you choose?

Choose OptinMonster if you want forms inside your pages or a cheaper first year on a small site; choose Popupsmart if you want every targeting rule and integration on every plan, the free one included, and a lower price from the second year on.

OptinMonster has built more ways to show a form, and its first year can cost less. Besides popups, bars and fullscreen views, it puts inline and sidebar forms inside your pages, locks content behind a signup, and runs follow-up campaigns that react to what a visitor did with an earlier one. It measures the revenue each campaign brings and gives agencies sub-accounts and client logins. Its integrations list has 35 email, CRM and automation tools to Popupsmart's 19, and its team answers email and chat around the clock on weekdays. The smallest plan costs $21 a month for 2,500 campaign impressions, or $7 a month for the first year billed annually. That's well below Popupsmart's cheapest paid plan, $39 a month or $32.50 billed annually, and a small site, or one whose campaigns show on few pages, may need nothing more.

Popupsmart's case is what every plan includes. Exit intent, traffic-source, location, new-visitor and browser-language targeting are on every Popupsmart plan, the free one too; OptinMonster sells exit intent and traffic-source targeting from its Pro plan ($87 a month) and location and new-visitor targeting only on Growth ($147). Its HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier and webhook connections also start on Pro, where every Popupsmart integration comes with every plan. Sized the way OptinMonster's own pricing FAQ advises, Popupsmart costs less at every traffic tier compared on monthly billing, and from the second year on annual billing, when OptinMonster renews at full price. It also has cookie consent, click-to-call and an autoresponder email, and covers more websites on each plan.

A word on who wrote this. I founded Popupsmart in 2018, after five years of growth consulting at Flatart, the agency I started in 2013, so I'm not a neutral judge of this match. I've tried to be a checkable one instead. Every OptinMonster fact here is from optinmonster.com, read on 26 Sep 2026; every Popupsmart fact is from our pricing page and help center; and every number about what works is from our own 2026 benchmark. That data didn't always take our side. Exit intent is on every Popupsmart plan, and I could have sold it as a free win over OptinMonster's Pro plan; across 28,674 campaigns its advantage could be chance, so the table further down says exactly that.

How the two tools differ

Popupsmart

Popupsmart bills on pageviews and puts every targeting rule, campaign type and integration on every plan; plans differ by traffic, websites, analytics and A/B testing.

The free plan carries 5,000 pageviews a month with every targeting rule and campaign type, one popup live at a time and Popupsmart branding. Paid plans start at $39 a month ($32.50 billed annually) for 50,000 pageviews on three websites, and add unlimited popups, analytics, custom fonts and CSS, and Smart Mode, which picks the audience with AI. A/B testing starts on the Advanced plan, $69 a month. Leads go to 19 destinations, HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier and Make among them, or to its built-in autoresponder email. On Shopify it targets by cart value and contents and reports the revenue its popups drive.

OptinMonster

OptinMonster bills on campaign impressions and unlocks features plan by plan: exit intent from Pro, location and new-visitor targeting on Growth.

There is no free plan; a 14-day money-back guarantee instead. Plans run from Basic, $21 a month for 2,500 campaign impressions on one site, to Growth, $147 a month for 100,000 on five sites. Annual billing lowers them, and the first year is 60% off list: $7 to $49 a month, renewing at $17.50 to $122.50. Every plan has unlimited campaigns, its whole template library and AI that rewrites a campaign's copy. Plus adds A/B testing and device targeting; Pro adds exit intent, countdown timers, referrer and UTM targeting, scheduling, revenue attribution, the HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier and webhook connections, and drops its badge; Growth adds location and new-visitor targeting, OnSite Retargeting, follow-up campaigns, coupon wheels and store integrations.

Monthly list prices, billed monthly, as each company's pricing pages showed them from a US location on 26 Sep 2026. The two bill in different units: Popupsmart counts pageviews, OptinMonster counts campaign impressions, one each time a visitor sees a campaign. OptinMonster's pricing FAQ recommends "a plan with 20-30% more impressions than you have website pageviews", so each tier is priced at the smallest OptinMonster plan holding 20% more impressions than its pageviews, and at the smallest Popupsmart plan that covers them. Fewer campaigns, or campaigns on fewer pages, use fewer impressions: across Popupsmart's 2026 benchmark, 28,674 campaigns recorded 499.6 million popup displays on 1.98 billion page views. Past about 83,000 pageviews the advice outgrows Growth's 100,000 impressions, and OptinMonster moves you to a custom plan.

OptinMonster's column is read from optinmonster.com's pricing pages (annual and monthly), features page and integrations list on 26 Sep 2026; where a feature sits on a plan, the plan named is the lowest that lists it. Popupsmart's column is from our pricing page and help center. A dash means the company's own pages don't list it.

The features they plan differently, against 28,674 campaigns

OptinMonster keeps much of its targeting for its higher plans. Popupsmart puts the same rules on every plan, the free one included. We measured these features in our 2026 benchmark: 28,674 campaigns from 11,533 businesses that ran a popup with Popupsmart between January 2024 and September 2026. Not every result helps our case. Exit intent's advantage could be chance, and gamified popups get more clicks but not more leads.

CapabilityWhat 28,674 Popupsmart campaigns showedPopupsmartOptinMonster
Exit intentNo statistically reliable advantage: popups on the most sensitive exit-intent setting converted 1.10% vs 0.78% without exit intent (median campaign), a gap that could be chance.Every plan, free includedPro plan and up
New and returning visitorsPopups targeted at new visitors only convert 1.13% vs 0.77% for popups shown to everyone.Every plan, free includedGrowth plan
Traffic sourceVisitors arriving from an email or SMS campaign convert on popups at 1.81% vs 0.74% for visitors from organic search.Every plan, free includedPro plan and up
LocationBy visitor country, popups convert 0.76% for visitors in the United Kingdom vs 0.34% in Germany, and 2.01% in Mexico vs 0.46% in the United States (median campaign).Every plan, free includedGrowth plan
Browser languageWhen a visitor's browser language matches the popup's language, the same popup converts better in most campaigns.Every plan, free included
DeviceMobile visitors convert on popups at 1.02% vs 0.57% on desktop (median campaign), and 63% of popup displays happen on mobile.Plus plan and up
Spin-to-win and gamified popupsThey get far more clicks (7.33% vs 1.87% of displays, median campaign; the spin itself counts as a click), but do not collect measurably more email or phone leads than plain signup popups.Every plan, free includedGrowth plan
Autoresponder emailAmong businesses whose popups collect an email or phone number, 16% connect an external tool and 64% turn on the built-in autoresponder email.Every plan, free included

Rates are per popup display. "Median campaign" means half the campaigns did better and half did worse. Each line is quoted from the benchmark with its qualifiers: where it says a gap could be chance, treat it as a lean, not a rule. The benchmark measured Popupsmart popups, so it shows what a feature did there, not what it does inside OptinMonster. Plans as each company's pricing pages listed them on 26 Sep 2026.

Reviewers praise how easy OptinMonster is to use above everything else, and almost as often the leads and sales it brings in; then its design options, quick setup, support and targeting. Over a quarter name nothing they dislike. The complaints are about a learning curve and an editor that can confuse, missing features such as form fields and display logic, the price for small businesses and features kept for higher plans, reporting detail and bugs. Most of these reviews were written between 2019 and 2023, the busiest years being 2022 and 2023.

Reviewers most often praise how easy Popupsmart is to use and to set up without a developer, then its design options, its targeting and the leads it brings. Their complaints centre on limits: design options they would like wider, the free plan and pageview caps, the price step from free to paid, missing features and reporting depth.

How we made this comparison

Written from experience

We have built and sold Popupsmart, a popup builder, since 2018. That tells us what decides a purchase in this category: how a tool bills, what its free plan holds back, where it sends a lead, and what its users say. Those are the rows on this page.

It also makes Popupsmart one of the two products compared here. So nothing on the page rests on our word alone: every figure comes with its source and the date we read it.

Written by Emre Elbeyoğlu, Founder & CEO of Popupsmart.

The companies' own pages

OptinMonster's plans and features were read live from optinmonster.com on 26 Sep 2026, from a US location, as a buyer sees them: its pricing page, its monthly pricing page, its features page, its integrations page, its home page and its own comparison with Popupsmart.

Popupsmart's figures come from our pricing page and our help center. A feature a company's own pages don't list shows as "Not listed", not as missing.

G2's reviews

On 26 Sep 2026 we collected every review of both products on G2: all 108 of OptinMonster's and all 141 of Popupsmart's. An AI assistant read each one in full and sorted what it praises and criticises into themes, counting a review once per theme. No person has checked every tag. The ratings and review counts are G2's.

The quotes are verbatim, checked word for word against G2, and each links to its review with the labels G2 gives it: organic or invited, incentivized or not. Reviews reach G2 in different ways, so each product's source line says how many are which, and when they were written.

We re-read the companies' pages and G2 at least every 90 days, and the dates on this page move when we do. If a figure here is out of date, tell us through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Popupsmart and OptinMonster?
Both are no-code popup builders that run on any website from one script, with a WordPress plugin and Shopify support. OptinMonster bills on campaign impressions, has no free plan and unlocks features plan by plan: exit intent and traffic-source targeting from its Pro plan, location and new-visitor targeting on Growth. It also has more campaign formats, among them inline and sidebar forms, content lockers and follow-up campaigns. Popupsmart bills on pageviews, has a free plan for 5,000 pageviews a month, and puts every targeting rule, campaign type and integration on every plan; its plans differ by traffic, websites, analytics and A/B testing.
Is OptinMonster cheaper than Popupsmart?
In the first year on annual billing, often yes; on monthly billing, and from the second year, no. OptinMonster's smallest plan is $21 a month for 2,500 campaign impressions, or $7 a month for the first year billed annually and $17.50 after; Popupsmart's smallest paid plan is $39 a month, $32.50 billed annually, for 50,000 pageviews. Sized the way OptinMonster's pricing FAQ advises, with 20% more impressions than pageviews, a site with 20,000 pageviews needs Pro: $87 a month, or $29 for the first year and $72.50 after, against Popupsmart's $39 ($32.50 billed annually). At 50,000 pageviews it needs Growth: $147 a month, or $49 and then $122.50, against $39. These are the prices both pricing pages showed on 26 Sep 2026.
Does OptinMonster have a free plan?
No. It offers a 14-day money-back guarantee instead: a full refund if you don't see a positive return in the first 14 days. Popupsmart has a free plan for 5,000 pageviews a month with every campaign type, targeting rule and integration, one popup live at a time and Popupsmart branding.
What is an OptinMonster campaign impression, and how many do I need?
OptinMonster counts an impression each time a visitor sees one of its campaigns and bills by the number a month; Popupsmart counts pageviews on your site. OptinMonster's pricing FAQ recommends "a plan with 20-30% more impressions than you have website pageviews". How many you use depends on how many campaigns you run and where they show: across Popupsmart's 2026 benchmark, 28,674 campaigns recorded 499.6 million popup displays on 1.98 billion page views. If you go over, OptinMonster moves you up to the next plan, and above Growth's 100,000 impressions to a custom plan.
Which OptinMonster plan includes exit intent?
Pro and Growth: $87 and $147 a month, or $29 and $49 a month for the first year billed annually. Basic and Plus don't include it. On Popupsmart, exit intent is on every plan, including the free one, along with inactivity, scroll, time on page, traffic source, location and new-or-returning targeting.
Does exit intent improve popup conversion?
Not reliably, in Popupsmart's data. In its 2026 benchmark, 28,674 campaigns from January 2024 to September 2026, popups on the most sensitive exit-intent setting converted 1.10% vs 0.78% without exit intent (median campaign), a gap that could be chance. Who sees a popup showed clearer differences: popups targeted at new visitors only converted 1.13% vs 0.77% for popups shown to everyone, and visitors arriving from an email or SMS campaign converted at 1.81% vs 0.74% for visitors from organic search. The benchmark measured Popupsmart popups, not OptinMonster's.
Which one has more integrations?
OptinMonster. Its integrations list has 35 email, CRM and automation tools, against the 19 destinations in Popupsmart's help center. Both connect to Mailchimp, Klaviyo, HubSpot, ActiveCampaign, MailerLite, Brevo, Customer.io, Drip, EmailOctopus, Ontraport, Sendloop, Zapier, webhooks and Google Analytics. Only Popupsmart lists Salesforce, SendGrid, Sendy, Make and Meta Pixel; only OptinMonster lists AWeber, ConvertKit, GetResponse, Omnisend, Constant Contact, Keap and 16 more. The plan matters too: on OptinMonster, HubSpot, Klaviyo, Zapier, webhooks and Google Analytics start on Pro; on Popupsmart every integration is on every plan.
Which one has more campaign types?
OptinMonster has more ways to place a form: lightbox popups, floating bars, fullscreen welcome mats, slide-ins, inline and sidebar forms inside your pages, content lockers, coupon wheels and countdown timers, plus follow-up campaigns that react to an earlier one. Popupsmart has popups, floating bars, fullscreen and side popups, spin-to-win and other gamified popups, countdown timers and multi-step forms, and campaign types OptinMonster doesn't list: cookie consent, click-to-call and an autoresponder email. Popupsmart has no inline forms or content lockers.
Which one is better for WordPress?
Both install on WordPress through a plugin and build campaigns in their own web app. OptinMonster suits a blog that wants forms inside its posts: inline forms, sidebar forms and content lockers. Popupsmart's campaigns show as popups, bars and fullscreen views, and all of its targeting is on the free plan, where OptinMonster's starts on paid plans and grows with them.
Which one is better for a Shopify store?
On Shopify, Popupsmart targets by cart value, cart contents, purchase history and customer tags, creates a unique Shopify discount code for each visitor, can show products from a product feed, and reports the revenue its popups drive. OptinMonster lists Shopify among its integrations; its cart targeting and store integrations come with the Growth plan ($147 a month), coupon wheels too, and it measures revenue per campaign from Pro.
How do G2 reviewers rate Popupsmart and OptinMonster?
On 26 Sep 2026, OptinMonster was rated 4.3 from 108 reviews and Popupsmart 4.5 from 141. Both sets praise ease of use first. OptinMonster's reviewers then credit the leads and sales it brings and its support, and complain most about a learning curve and missing features; Popupsmart's praise setup without developers and complain most about design limits and missing features. Most of OptinMonster's reviews were written between 2019 and 2023, and G2 labels about two in three organic; most of Popupsmart's came through its own invitations.
Can I switch from OptinMonster to Popupsmart?
Yes. Popupsmart installs with one line of JavaScript on any website, or through its Shopify app or WordPress plugin. Rebuild your best campaign on the free plan first and upgrade once it converts. Connect the same email tool in Popupsmart, and new leads go to the list your OptinMonster campaigns fed.
Which one should I choose?
Choose OptinMonster if you need forms inside your pages, content lockers or follow-up campaigns, if you manage client sites and want sub-accounts, or if your site is small and its first-year price decides it. Choose Popupsmart if you want exit intent, location, traffic-source and new-visitor targeting and every integration on every plan, a free plan to start on and a lower price from the second year, or cookie consent, click-to-call and an autoresponder email.
