How to add a popup to Wix
To add a pop up on Wix, paste Popupsmart's embed code into your site's Custom code settings once, on all pages at Body - end, then build and publish popups from the Popupsmart dashboard. Wix's own Popup, formerly called a lightbox, opens on page load or a click; Popupsmart adds exit intent, scroll and URL rules.
Wix runs custom code only on a published site with a connected domain, which needs a Premium plan.

Before you start
You need three things, and a developer isn't one of them:
- Access to your site's Wix dashboard with permission to change its settings.
- A published Wix site with a connected domain. According to Wix's custom code guide, custom code runs only on a published site with a connected domain, and connecting a domain needs a Wix Premium plan.
- A free Popupsmart account. The free plan covers one website and one live popup, so you can finish this guide without paying.
How to add a pop up on Wix
A Wix popup from Popupsmart needs one embed code in your site's Custom code settings, set once for all pages. After that you build, change and publish popups in Popupsmart without opening Wix again.
Step 1: Create your Popupsmart account
Create a free Popupsmart account, or sign in to the one you have.

Step 2: Copy your embed code
In the Popupsmart dashboard, click Embed Code in the left-hand menu.

Click Copy to clipboard. The code is one line, <script src="https://cdn.popupsmart.com/bundle.js" data-id="…" async defer></script>, and the data-id belongs to your account.

Step 3: Open Custom code in your Wix dashboard
Go to your site's Wix dashboard and click Settings in the left-hand menu.

Scroll down and click Custom code. As of September 2026, Wix lists it under Development & integrations; older dashboards, like the one in the screenshot, show it under Advanced.

Step 4: Paste the code at the end of the body
Click + Add Custom Code at the top right.

Paste the embed code into the snippet box, then give it a name you'll recognise later, such as "Popupsmart".

Under Add Code to Pages, keep All pages. Under Place Code in, choose Body - end, then click Apply.

Step 5: Add and verify your website
Back in Popupsmart, hover over the profile icon at the bottom left and click Websites.

Click + New Website.

Enter your Wix site's address, the connected domain your visitors use, and click Save.

If the site shows as Unverified, click Unverified, then Verify website, and go back to the dashboard and click Refresh. The guide to verifying your website covers the other cases.
Step 6: Create your popup
Click + New Campaign. Name the campaign, choose your Wix website and click Next.

Pick a template. Change its copy, colours and form fields in the Customize and Style steps, choose who sees it in Segment, and click Save.

Step 7: Publish and check the popup on your site
Open the Publish step and click Publish. Then open your Wix site in a private window. The popup appears when its trigger fires.

Does Wix have a built-in popup?
Yes. Wix has a Popup element, which the editor used to call a lightbox; Wix's developer API still uses the old name. According to Wix's help center, a Wix Popup opens when a page loads, after a delay you set, or when a visitor clicks an element linked to it, and only one popup can open automatically on a page. As of September 2026, the Wix Harmony editor's popup guide describes the same model: a delay of up to one minute, linked elements, and no more than one automatic popup per page.
| Wix's built-in Popup | Popupsmart | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Your Wix site, set up in the Wix Editor or Wix Harmony | Any website that accepts the embed code; paid plans cover several sites (3 on Basic, unlimited on Expert) |
| Popups live at once | One that opens automatically per page; more can open from linked elements | One on the free plan; unlimited on paid plans |
| When it opens | On page load after a delay, or on a click; the Wix Editor also has a schedule | Exit intent, scroll depth or time on page |
| Pages | The pages you tick, or the first page a visitor sees | URL and device rules on each campaign |
| Where the leads go | A Wix form inside the popup saves contact fields to your Wix Contact List | The help center lists 19 destinations, including Klaviyo, Mailchimp and HubSpot |
| A/B testing | Not documented | From the Advanced plan |
| Price | No plan requirement in the popup guides | Free plan: one website, one live popup, 5,000 pageviews a month; paid plans from $39 a month |
A Wix Popup is enough for one welcome message or a box that opens on a click, and it keeps the design inside the Wix editor. Popupsmart earns its install when you want a second automatic popup on the same page, such as a welcome offer on load and an exit-intent offer later, or leads in an email tool rather than the Wix Contact List. To try Wix's route first, the walkthrough on how to create a popup in the Wix Editor covers it.
How do you add a subscribe pop up on Wix?
A subscribe pop up on Wix is either a Wix Popup with a Wix form inside it, or a Popupsmart popup with an email field connected to your email tool. The choice comes down to where you want the subscribers to end up.
With Wix's own Popup, you add a form to the popup in the editor. According to Wix's forms guide, the new Wix Forms save contact fields, such as the email address, to your Contact List automatically.
With Popupsmart, you drag an email field (and a phone or consent field, if you need one) into the popup on the Customize step, and every submission lands in the Leads section of your dashboard. To send subscribers to your email tool, connect it in the campaign's Integration section. The Mailchimp popup guide and the Klaviyo popup guide walk through a connection; the help center lists 19 destinations, and a webhook, Zapier or Make covers a tool that isn't one of them. Popupsmart collects the contacts; your email tool sends the emails.
How do you show a popup only on some Wix pages?
Keep the Popupsmart code on all pages and choose the pages on each campaign, with a URL rule such as "the URL contains /blog". Wix's Choose specific pages option can limit where the code loads, but a page you add later won't have it until you edit the setting again. When I set this up with a customer, I leave the snippet on All pages, which Wix applies to future pages too, and do the page choice in Popupsmart. The help center's page on URL targeting shows how to show or hide a popup by address.
Pages are half of the rule; timing is the other half. In Popupsmart's 2026 benchmark, popups that wait before appearing convert 0.83% against 0.61% for popups shown the instant the page loads (median campaign), a lean rather than a proven gap, and exit intent shows no statistically reliable advantage. When a popup fires is worth deciding on purpose, and a Wix Popup's automatic trigger offers only a delay.
Popup ideas for a Wix site
Wix runs small business sites, online stores and blogs, so start from the job the page has:
- Callback requests on service pages: the callback popup recipe.
- A last offer for visitors about to leave your store: the exit-intent popup recipe.
- Visitor feedback, like the popup in the screenshots: the survey popup recipe.
Does a popup slow down a Wix site?
A Popupsmart popup doesn't hold up your Wix pages: the embed code sits at the end of the page body and loads asynchronously (async defer), so the browser builds your page before it fetches Popupsmart. Wix shows a general warning under every custom code box that third-party code may affect performance; placing this snippet at Body - end keeps it out of the way of your content.
Popup not showing on Wix? Check these
When a Wix popup doesn't appear, work down this list; the first three causes are specific to Wix.
- The site has no connected domain. Wix runs custom code only on a published site with a connected domain.
- The page isn't covered. If you picked Choose specific pages, the page may be missing from the list. Switch the snippet to All pages.
- The code type waits for consent. Wix marks custom code as Essential by default, which loads before cookie consent. If you changed the snippet's type on the Code Type tab, it may wait until the visitor accepts cookies.
- The website isn't verified. A campaign runs only on a verified website; see Step 5.
- The address doesn't match.
www.example.comandexample.comare different sites to a browser. Add the address your visitors actually use. - The trigger hasn't fired yet. An exit-intent or scroll trigger waits for the visitor to leave or scroll; test in a private window and behave like a visitor.
Wix popup FAQ
How do I edit a popup on Wix?
A Wix Popup is edited in the editor: in the Wix Editor, click Pages & Menu, then Popups, and open the popup you want to change. A Popupsmart popup is edited in the Popupsmart dashboard: open the campaign, make the change and publish it again. The embed code in your Wix settings stays as it is.
How do you create a popup box on Wix?
In the Wix Editor, click Add Elements, then Interactive, pick a design under Popups and drag it onto your site; in the Wix Harmony editor, the Popup element is under Add, then Elements. For a popup box with exit intent or its own targeting, add Popupsmart's embed code once in Custom code and build the box from a Popupsmart template.
Is there a free way to add a popup to Wix?
Yes, on the Popupsmart side. Popupsmart's free plan is permanent, not a trial: one website, one live popup and 5,000 pageviews a month, with Popupsmart branding. Wix itself only runs custom code on a published site with a connected domain, and connecting a domain needs a Wix Premium plan.
The Popupsmart pricing page compares the free plan with the paid plans.
How long does it take to add a popup to Wix?
The Wix side is one snippet in Custom code; the rest is building the popup. Among people who published a campaign in the 90 days to 16 September 2026, the median time from signup to the first published campaign was 32.5 minutes, and 287 of 332 published within a day, according to Popupsmart's own product data. That figure covers every platform, not Wix alone.
Will the popup work on the mobile version of my Wix site?
Yes. The same embed code loads on phones and desktops. The Popupsmart editor has a desktop and a mobile view, and device targeting lets you choose which devices a campaign shows on.
